OBERAMMERGAU 2010 - FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS

Tangney Tours are making their plans now and would like to know preferences of people who would like to go.

The first one is 'Preferred dates'. Easter 2010 falls on 4th April, which is a little early since people still manage to go skiing at Easter time*. Perhaps it would be a good idea to restrict the possible months to May and June and September.   So far May seems to be the preferred choice.  I shall therefore put May forward to Tangney as a starting point.

The Disability Discrimination Act

The aim of the Disability Discrimination Act (1995) is to stop discrimination against disabled people including the hearing impaired. The Act was recently extended to cover education in schools and colleges.

Service providers, including organisations offering services to the general public, must take 'reasonable' adjustments to ensure that they do not unlawfully discriminate against disabled people.

Under the act, 'reasonable' adjustments include the provision of of various auxiliary aids, including induction loop systems, to enable a deaf or hard of hearing person to access goods, facilities or services available to the general public. At present, service providers do not have to make any permanent adjustment to their buildings, but this is about to change.

From October 2004, service providers were required to install permanent induction loops and infra-red systems where it is impossible or unreasonably difficult for a deaf or hard of hearing person to make use of a service.

It is also not enough simply to install an induction loop system - it must be properly maintained and staff must know how to use it. (5.13)

Church PA recommends that churches take steps now to prepare for their extended obligations.

The CTS of hallowed memory has burst enthusiastically into the 21st Century with a new series of books collectively called Christianity Pure and Simple.  The titles of the five booklets cover the main areas of understanding and living the  Christian faith,  obviously with a Catholic slant!  The titles and fields covered by the series are:

  • Is Anybody There? - The Question of God

  • The God Man - Finding the Real Jesus

  • The Fire of Life - Who is the Holy Spirit?

  • The Great Battle - Living by Faith

  • Welcome Home - Belonging to the Church

An attractively illustrated 'Seed Leaflet' is now available.  It is hoped this might catch the interest of people  looking for some sort of anchor in their lives, or as the CTS puts it, meeting 'Jesus Christ as the solution to the problems of life.'
